Since Aug 2020 Sketch Design Repeat is hosting the 3×3 design challenge every year. In only few weeks the challenge is going in its next round – starts on February 17 2023.

What is this challenge about?

It is a 3-weeks challenge, each week we are invited to create an illustration, a design or pattern for
one evergreen theme – Christmas, Birthday, Florals. The aim of the challenge is to create artwork for one´s own design portfolio and to work on themes that are always in demand and needed instead of following fast changing trends.

The prompts are sent per e-mail as a PDF file which includes a Pinterest-board, coluor palette, insight of the theme and some inspirational ideas.

I participated in all 3 rounds of the 3×3 challenge and created lots of artwork. First, I drew some stand-alone illustrations and lettering pieces, later on I worked on patterns with a product in mind. I enjoyed the suggested themes, inspirational boards, colours and the whole process a lot. It was so inspiring and fun to see what everyone came up with in Instagram on one and the same theme. I was amazed how many different interpretations are possible.

In conclusion the best part of this challenge for me is that I’m working strategically on my portfolio. Here are the designs I created for the 3 past rounds so far.
